J.P. Morgan Early Life and Career Beginnings
On April 17, 1837, John Pierpont Morgan—better known by his initials, J. P. Morgan—was born in Hartford, Connecticut. Junius Spencer Morgan, his father, belonged to the powerful Morgan family. He was educated at Boston’s English High institution, a well-known trade institution. Following graduation, he attended the University of Gottingen to improve his German language proficiency before studying French at a school in the Swiss hamlet of La Tour-de-Peilz.
J.P. Morgan Personal Life and Death
Morgan wed Amelia Sturges, also called Mimi, in 1861; she died the following year. Then, in May 1865, he wed Frances Louisa Tracy, also called Fanny. Together, he and Fanny had four children: Juliet Pierpont Morgan, J. P. Morgan Jr., Anna Tracy Morgan, and Louisa Pierpont Morgan. Morgan had rhinophyma, which caused his nose to become deformed as a result of his rosacea. Because he felt self-conscious about his appearance, Morgan was well known to detest media attention and being in photos. He has been an Episcopal Church member all of his life.
On March 31, 1913, while visiting Europe and lodging at the Grand Hotel Plaza in Rom, Italy, Morgan died away peacefully in his sleep.
