Prominent Maharashtrian poet, social reformer, educator, and advocate for education Savitribai Phule (pronunciation unknown). Working in Maharashtra with her husband Jyotiba Phule, she played a significant role in the advancement of women’s rights in India. She is recognized for having initiated the Indian feminist movement. In Pune’s Bhidewada neighborhood, Savitribai and Jyotiba founded one of the first early modern Indian girls’ schools in 1848. She fought against discrimination based on gender and caste as well as unfair treatment of people.
